Anodising is an electrochemical surface treatment, used to apply a protective extra layer to aluminium. Anodising improves aluminium’s corrosion resistance, making the material more durable. There is also a decorative aspect to anodising: the extra layer is more attractive to look at than the natural oxide layer and anodizing allows colour to be applied to aluminium.
